9 sci-fi and fantasy books to read in May

Wed, 05/02/2018 - 23:31

Summer is always better reading time for me than winter. In winter I’m much more likely to be curled up under a blanket watching TV, but summer means I can take my lemonade (or beer) and head outside to read in the sun. And after how brutal this winter has been, I want to soak up as much sun as I can before it gets too hot.

Ryan Reynolds doesn’t know if there will be a Deadpool 3, but he’s got other ideas

Wed, 05/02/2018 - 22:40

Remember that bit at the end of one of the eleven Deadpool 2 trailers, where DP and his buddy Weasel are talking about how the sequel lives up to hype so much so that they probably won’t make a third installment? And then DP says, “Yeah, why would they? Stop at 2, ya killed it!” And we all laughed?

Well, maybe that wasn’t a joke after all.

51 thoughts we had while watching Pocahontas

Wed, 05/02/2018 - 22:31

With all the social injustice going on in the world, I decided to watch Disney's 1995 tale Pocahontas with a critical eye and boy, does this movie resonate with the current state we’re living in. Not only was this film subconsciously setting me (a woman of color) up for some of the pitfalls my peers would have to endure, but it was probably — believe it or not — my introduction to a Disney character of color, who was also in an interracial relationship. Way to be progressive, Disney!

Josh Malerman’s twisted fairy tale Unbury Carol is a legend of strange magic

Wed, 05/02/2018 - 22:30

Fairy tales can be twisted. They can take you to fantastical places where there are no glittering castles or Prince Charmings or talking rabbits in sight. They can cloak themselves in shadows and even verge on horror.

Josh Malerman never intended to write a fairy tale with his latest novel Unbury Carol. But when the ghosts of characters swirling in his imagination appeared in the flesh on the dusty trails of an Old West alt-verse, the story that accidentally turned into a warped version of Sleeping Beauty took on a magic of its own.

Nic Cage was almost a Bahamian villain in Green Hornet

Wed, 05/02/2018 - 21:24

While Green Hornet was never anyone’s favorite superhero movie, it still possessed plenty of oddball charm that proved comedy and crime-fighting still belonged together in the modern franchise landscape. The Michel Gondry-directed, Seth Rogen-written/starring film was plenty weird, but it could’ve been a whole lot weirder.
