Quiet Earth - Wed, 04/25/2018 - 23:34
Writer/director Zack Wilcox has pretty much done every job there is to do on a film set and now he's adding directing to his resume with his feature film debut Hunting Lands.

Marshall Cook stars as Frank Olsen, a veteran determined to create a life for himself outside of society but when he finds an injured woman in the snowy wilderness he must decide whether to let her die or return to civilization to save her.

Along with Cook, the movie also stars Joe Raffa and Keyna Reynolds.

Wilcox's background as cinematographer is clear in the trailer which suggests a movie which beautifully captures the starkness of life off the grid and Cook has received accolades for his leading performance as a man who dislikes modern society and retreats to find peace and sol [Continued ...]

Nic Cage is (Shocker!) Bitter Cop in 211 [Trailer]

Quiet Earth - Tue, 04/24/2018 - 23:04
At some point, I'm sure movies about Nicholas Cage playing a cop will reach over saturation but we haven't quite reached that peak moment yet so for now, at least, the Nicholas-Cage-cop-movies continue to come.

The latest is 211, which is written and directed by York Shackleton and is, according to the press notes, "inspired by one of the longest and bloodiest real-life events in police history."

Cage stars as Mike Chandler, veteran officer near retirement who, along with his rookie partner, pick up a kid for a ride along. Their day is fairly routine until the cops find themselves amidst a bank robbery in progress (hence the movie's title - the police code for bank robbery) with no back-up in sight.

In addition to Cage, the movie also stars Cory Hardrict, Michael Rain [Continued ...]

Jim Carey Gets Serious in Murder Drama DARK CRIMES [Trailer]

Quiet Earth - Mon, 04/23/2018 - 22:49
It's not too surprising to see Jim Carey step into darker material. It's said that comedians have a dark streak and Carey's has always lingered on the surface; more so than most.

Dark Crimes stars Carey as Tadek, a detective investigating the grizzly death of a salesman, who turns to an author and his novel, a novel which features a similar crime, for answers. Along with Carey, the movie also stars Marton Csokas and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

The movie is adapted from a David Grann story which appeared in The New Yorker a decade ago, and is directed by Greek director Alexandros Avranas who first caught my attention a number of years ago with Miss Violence ( [Continued ...]

Han, Chewie and Lando Are Stylin' in New 'Solo' Photos

SciFi Squad - Sat, 04/21/2018 - 05:18

We've got a little over a month until "Solo: A Star Wars Story" hits theaters. These photos (via EW) should help tide you over.

Alden Ehrenreich plays young Han Solo in this prequel, set 10 years before the first "Star Wars" film.

The actor talked to EW about working with Joonas Suotamo, who takes over the role of Chewbacca from Peter Mayhew: "Joonas is a really funny guy, and he also brings a lot to the role. It's clear when you're up close and seeing him do it just how much Wookiee craft he really has to do, knowing how to move in the suit to convey the right things."

Ehrenreich also talked about Han and Lando (Donald Glover). "Their relationship is many different things, as it is when you see them in the original films. I think they have very different styles."

Glover says Lando (first played by Billy Dee Williams) knows he looks good. "Lando's always the best-dressed person on that set. And I don't say that lightly. There's a lot of cool costumes and a lot of cool clothing," Glover says. "[Lando] takes pride in the clothing. It makes things easier. When people see you and you're debonair, they tend to want to give you stuff easier."

"Solo: A Star Wars Story" opens May 25.

'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 2 Adds Comedian Tig Notaro

SciFi Squad - Thu, 04/12/2018 - 05:34

The "Star Trek: Discovery" voyage has only begun. With the show long since renewed for Season 2, casting is underway.

The most recently revealed addition to the cast is comedian Tig Notaro. The actress and writer has signed on for a guest role, Variety reports. She'll appear as a new character named Denise Reno, the chief engineer of the U.S.S. Hiawatha.

Notaro comes to the series having hosted podcasts, done stand-up, and written several projects. Not only did she star in Amazon's "One Mississippi," she co-created the series with Diablo Cody. Some of her other recent work includes the upcoming film "Dog Days," a multi-episode arc on "Transparent," and the Netflix documentary "Tig."

The actress's casting comes in the wake of another addition -- that of Anson Mount. Unlike Notaro, he'll play a character fans of the franchise have already seen -- Christopher Pike, captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Pike has been played by multiple actors since the original series, including Jeffrey Hunter, Sean Kenney, and Bruce Greenwood. Pike placed a distress call at the end of "Star Trek: Discovery" Season 1, and it was received by the U.S.S. Discovery, bringing the Enterprise into the story.

Season 2 will pick up with more of the Discovery's adventures. Its premiere date has not yet been announced.

'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Star Alden Ehrenreich Promises 'A Lot of Humor'

SciFi Squad - Thu, 04/12/2018 - 03:46

We've seen numerous Star Wars stories at this point, but "Solo" is bringing us something different.

"The Star Wars Show" recently brought "Solo" stars Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover on to chat about the upcoming prequel, and they teased some ways the film may surprise the franchise's fans. They had a lot to say about the iconic film series and their respective "Solo" characters, Han and Lando. The two also delved into the movie as a whole, with Ehrenreich highlighting how funny it is.

"It has a lot of jokes, a lot of humor," the actor said when asked how "Solo" differs from other Star Wars films. "You spend a lot more time dealing with the feelings and the kind of inner life of the characters."

Glover, who is a big Star Wars fan, pointed out how it shows the growth of the characters.

"I like seeing Han and Lando beforehand," he said, "because it allows you to just know that, like, yeah, people aren't perfect. Like, people have to grow."

Watch their interviews below, starting at 2:48.

"Solo: A Star Wars Story" hits theaters May 25.
