Lucasfilm Digitally Scans All Its Actors' Faces 'For Reference Later'

SciFi Squad - Tue, 04/10/2018 - 02:36

Lucasfilm swore we wouldn't be getting a CG Princess Leia in upcoming "Star Wars" films, but we've actually already seen her. Twice.

Obviously, the young all-CG Leia who appeared at the end of "Rogue One" did so with digital magic. And, as it turns out, the floating Leia in "The Last Jedi" was a blend of CG and the real Carrie Fisher, "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" digital animator Stephen Alpin told Inverse.

He explained to Inverse that filming that scene entirely in-camera would have been "cost-prohibitive... You don't just have the range of freedom that you actually get with CG," Alpin says. "If we can shoot it in-camera, let's shoot it in-camera. If there's a certain aspect to it, let's shoot it, and then we can match to it." The CG (based on stunt models) was then matched to the real, live Fisher.

"Last Jedi" VFX supervisor Ben Morris told Inverse: "We will always [digitally] scan all the lead actors in the film. We don't know if we're going to need them. We don't intentionally scan them as an archive process. It's for reference later."

VFX supervisor Ben Morris said it's not just the older actors (whose sudden demise could drastically affect the series, as Fisher's death did in 2016.) Morris tells Inverse, "It's the young actors, the old actors," he says. "All the actors." Even the aliens.

Peter Cushing played a key role in "Rogue One" as Grand Moff Tarkin despite the actor having passed away in 1994. In Cushing's case, a digital version of the deceased actor was blended with live actor Guy Henry. The young CG Leia was melded with actress Ingvild Deila.

Does this mean more CG versions of actors no longer with us? Or no longer young? Unless the technology vastly improves, the result will remain jarring and not quite convincing.

'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Will Premiere at Cannes Film Fest

SciFi Squad - Sat, 04/07/2018 - 03:35

Audiences at this year's Cannes Film Festival will be the first to see "Solo: A Star Wars Story."

The fest announced the news today via Twitter that the film will screen there on May 15, a full 10 days before its official US release date of May 25.

The new film of the Star Wars ™ galaxy, Solo: A Star Wars story, in Official Selection! One of the greatest myths in the history of cinema returns Out of Competition to the Festival de Cannes' red carpet . #Cannes2018 #SoloAStarWarsStoryhttps://t.co/ke7GqsHhWV pic.twitter.com/QBq4SqZYOu

— Festival de Cannes (@Festival_Cannes) April 6, 2018

But remember, no selfies with Chewbacca on the red carpet!

The sci-fi prequel, which introduces us to Alden Ehrenreich as the young Han Solo, will screen out of competition, just like "Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones" and "Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith" did.

Critics at Cannes tend to be brutally honest, so we can't wait to see what the reaction is to this notoriously troubled production.

Even if you're in France and you can't make it to Cannes, you'll still gets "Solo" earlier than in the U.S.: The film opens on May 23 in most of Europe. (Pity poor Japan: The film doesn't open there until June!)

Video: Ku Klu Klan Video in Mississippi and Response

ClipSyndicate Gay News - Thu, 03/29/2018 - 03:30
A video has surfaced of a KKK group, the United Dixie White Knights, threatening members of the Mississippi Rising Coalition. Members who were personally called out in the video addressed the issue during a press conference in ocean springs this morning. News 25's Caroline Eaker has our report.  "I mean you see these .... And these whites getting married and you see these homosexuals and stuff performing these acts and stuff like that with their little gay parades." KKK video White hoods and burning crosses are not a thing of the past, as evidenced by members of the local NAACP and the Mississippi Rising Coalition who were alerted to a ten minute YouTube video posted by the United Dixie White Knights, which named them personally. The video has since been taken down, but not before News 25 obtained a copy of it.  "And you got these liberal homosexual groups out there like Mississippi Rising Coalition who shouldn't even exist in my great state of Mississippi Old Lea Campbell out there wanting to spread her garbage about our organization and say we are a group or band of bigots." Words not taken lightly by Leah Campbell, President Of The Mississippi Rising Coalition, a group that has been vocal and consistent in their opinions about the state flag and their drive and petitions to have the Mississippi State Flag, changed to a flag without the confederate battle emblem, a symbol Campbell and others in the group find offensive. The threatening video has not stopped Campbell, Mississippi Rising or members of the NAACP from exercising their rights and voicing their views, as clearly stated in a press conference at ocean springs city hall Wednesday morning in response to the on line threats against them. "We believe you sent this to us not only to intimidate but in the hopes that we would react publicly you get your wish we are eager to confront you, your hateful bigotry, white supremacy and your allies publicly." Leah Campbell, President Of The Mississippi Rising Coalition "We will fight also so bring it." In Ocean Springs Caroline Eaker, News 25.

It Was a 'Star Wars' Reunion at Mark Hamill's Walk of Fame Star Ceremony

SciFi Squad - Fri, 03/09/2018 - 23:28

Congrats to Jedi master Mark Hamill, who finally got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Joining him at the ceremony yesterday were "Star Wars" creator George Lucas and Harrison Ford.

Noting the absence of Carrie Fisher, who died in 2016, Ford told the crowd, "When thinking about today, I was really sorry we don't have the other member of our trio to celebrate with us, but I feel her presence." (A moment while we wipe away something that just got in our eye.)

On a much lighter note, Ford also said that when he looked back at the screen test he did with Hamill in 1976, "I was surprised by how good he was."

Hamill recalled the advice his "Star Wars" costar gave him back in the day: "''Hey, kid, Don't get cocky.' And I have tried to remember that to this very day."

He also thanked Lucas for his "genius," saying he "wouldn't be standing here today" if Lucas hadn't created a certain sky-gazing farm boy.

"Mark Hamill is a character that can't be written," said Lucas. "He is extremely enthusiastic about everything he does, and that is exactly what I was looking for when I cast Luke Skywalker."

"It's hard to convey my gratitude, my joy and the exhilaration," the actor told the thousands of fans who turned out for the event. Joking about his brief (and silent) appearance in his second-to-last "Star Wars" film, Hamill said, "I haven't been this speechless since 'Force Awakens.'"

Hamill's star is in front of the Disney-owned El Capitan Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. Ford's star, which was given in 2003, is in the 6800 block of Hollywood Blvd. Sadly, Carrie Fisher never got a star in her lifetime, but may still be honored posthumously.

Watch the whole ceremony in the video below.

Video: Gay Pride Parade will take place in Starkville

ClipSyndicate Gay News - Wed, 03/07/2018 - 23:33
It was a packed house inside and out at Starkville City Hall last night as aldermen revisited a move denying a parade permit to an LGBT group. After hearing public input from both sides of the issue, a motion was made to allow the parade to go on. Three of the original ‘no’ votes repeated their opposition, but Alderman David Little abstained, forcing a three to three tie. Mayor Lynn Spruill then cast the tie-breaking vote allowing the parade to move forward. The city is not sponsoring the parade, but organizers will receive in-kind services from the police, fire, and sanitation departments for the event. After the vote, celebration broke out from those who were in favor of having the parade. Starkville Pride Director Bailey McDaniel said, “I’m really excited. I’m so relieved because I get to be a 22-year-old again. I get to be the organizer of Pride again. I get to prepare the next two weeks instead of going to court. I get to decide what kind of rainbow apparel my dog is going to wear in the parade.” Mayor Spruill said, “I am certainly hopeful that it sends the message that we, upon reflection, have become a more inclusive community in the sense that we recognize the value and that we support all of our citizens and some of the efforts that they are trying to get their message out there. It’s just a parade. It’s a celebration.” The Gay Pride Parade will take place in downtown Starkville March 24th.
